Formerly Associate Dean of the Business School at Bournemouth University, John held a number of posts in higher education including Course Director in a Faculty of Applied Sciences, Head of Human Resource Management Academic Group and Director of Postgraduate Studies. He led the development of an innovative Master's degree in Business Administration and has developed and led a range of leadership and other courses for healthcare professionals and managers. He has a law degree and is a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development. He holds three non-executive directorships in business organisations.
He commenced his career with Saunders-Roe Aviation and worked in development engineering for a number of years before joining Thorn Electrical Industries where he was employed in training, personnel management and management and leadership development. He has undertaken a wide range of coaching and consultancy projects in private and public sectors. His major areas of interest are organisation and leadership development, team-working and healthcare management. He also has a special interest in leadership succession in family business.
John has published articles and presented papers on leadership and related topics in the NHS. He co-authored "Medical Student to Medical Director" (NHSTD, 1995), “Medical Appraisal, Selection and Revalidation” (Royal Society of Medicine Press, 2000) and "The Specialist Registrar Handbook” (2nd Edition, Radcliffe 2001). Both editions of the latter text received the British Association of Medical Managers Book of the Year Runner-Up Award in 1999 and 2002. A third edition of this text is due later this year.
